چکیده
This paper presents results of an exploratory experimental study of the effects of interruptions on the execution of computerised clerical tasks, provides classification of interruption handling strategies, and gives some recommendations for the user interface design for frequently interrupted work conditions.

Please Do Not Disturb: Managing Interruptions And Task Complexity
The increasing use of computer-mediated communication (CMC) by knowledge workers in problemsolving environments intensifies the need for empirical evidence on the effects of interruption on users’ problem-solving performance. Email and instant messaging are common desktop and mobile applications that frequently seek the user’s attention via audible and visual cues. This study is concerned with ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Task Interruption and Information Presentation on Indmdual Decision Making
Research examining factors that influence decision-making performance has a rich tradition across multiple research disciplines. Very little of this research effort, however, has been directed at examining the influence of the decision making environment on performance. The environment of decision makers can be characterized as one with disjointed activities and frequent interruptions. Thus, an...
متن کاملTechnology Mediated Interruptions: The Effects of Task and Interruption Characteristics on Decision-Making
Interruptions are uncontrollable attention breakers that create stress in the work environment. Past literature has shown that interruptions impair performance. This study examines two common interruption characteristics; frequency and complexity, and investigates their effect on decision-making performance by employing cognitive fit theory (Vessey, 1991), distraction conflict theory (Baron, 19...
متن کاملThe Effects of Task Interruption on Human Performance: A Study of the Systematic Classification of Human Behavior and Interruption Frequency
Interruptions are prevalent phenomena in modern working environments; yet, few interruption studies have been conducted on different types of human tasks. A study using computer-based human behavior tasks was carried out to investigate the effects of interruptions with 4 different primary-interrupting task sets. The tasks used in this study were determined by cognitive and motor skill processes...
متن کاملWorkflow and Performance Under Computer Mediated Interruptions
Technologically enhanced computer mediated communication (CMC) environments create a trade-off between eliminating delays and increasing performance. In such environments, incoming interruptions can break the “flow” of work and deteriorate performance. In this regard, we describe a mechanism that explains why particular types of information are attended to, and how such interruptions interrupt ...
